Prayer (Tefillah):
Microwave Magic?
Twentieth century, western, "gentile" American believers
have come to think of prayer (tefillah) as some "instant microwave magical
incantation" to force Yahweh to grant them their wishes "right
now" or instantly. We live in a society that demands "fast
food," fast service, no waiting in lines, and fast transportation.
The faster, the better! I know, because I am as guilty as the next man
when it comes to "waiting" on someone or something. So, I know
from whence I speak. But, I ask you, is this mind-set really Scriptural?
If we look at the eleventh chapter of Ivrim (Hebrews), we find the "gallery
of belief" or the faith men or women of the Scriptures. All of these
were people of great prayers and intercessions before Yahweh, just as we are to
seek Him "bichol levavchem" or "with our whole heart."
All of them waited many years to have their prayers answered and some never
lived to see the promises fulfilled. We find the same pattern throughout
the Scriptures. Yahweh has His people wait with patience or endurance to
test or try their "faith" in His Word and the promises given to them.
I know this is not a popular teaching today, with all the "faith"
teachings going around that are so popular. They are popular because they
appeal to our flesh and carnal minds. We do not like the idea of
"waiting upon Yahweh" for the answer. We want to SEE IT NOW and
HAVE IT NOW! But TRUE BELIEF IS PATIENT AND HAS ENDURANCE NO MATTER HOW
LONG WE HAVE TO WAIT, OR EVEN IF WE NEVER SEE THE PROMISE FULFILLED IN OUR
LIFETIME!
"And having
obtained witness through belief, all these did not receive the promise."
Heb. 11:39
"For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the desire
of Yahweh you receive the promise." Heb. 10:36.
In the fourteenth blessing
of the Shemoneth Esrai we ask Yahweh to return to Yerushalayim, rebuild
the Temple, and establish the throne of Dawid once again. This is speaking
of the Messianic age. We have prayed this prayer for around 2000 years,
yet we never get tired of the supplication and have to believe it will happen at
the correct time. Yet we say it daily and never tire of it. THAT IS
ENDURANCE!
Let us, as Messianic Israelites, shed this baggage from the "gentile"
mind-set and obtain the mind of Messiah Yahshua - a Hebrew mind, which is one
based upon the Word of Yahweh.
Shalom, Rabbi Ed
